Barack Obama's State of the Union Analysis
On the heels of last night's State of the Union Address, which focused largely on the economy and the division of wealth in this country, Republicans have called President Obama one of the most anti-businesspresidents in history. But its interesting to note that the stock market might tell us otherwise. Thismay come as a surprise, but President Obama actually hasn't faired toobadly when it comes to the market. As of last Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has risen60% under Obama - that makes him only one of five presidents to seethe Dow gain 50% or more in their first three years in office. And he's ingood company with two other democrats, Clinton and FDR, andRepublicans, Coolidge and Eisenhower. As for the losers, Hoover wasthe biggest loser, with market down nearly 73%, followed by Rooseveltand Carter.Of course all of this has to be taken with a grain of salt - clearlythe market and the economy are very nuanced, with multiple things at playduring all presidencies. For Obama it was Tarp, Bernanke's QE policy,for others, war and the great depression.It's important to note that the stock market is a leading indicator - meaning - market gains doNOT correlate with economic gains. Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) is expected to report first quarter earnings after the market close on Thursday with a conference call scheduled for 5:00 pm ET.According to First Call, analysts are looking for a profit of $0.49 on revenue of $3.29 billion. The consensus range is $0.46-$0.52 for EPS, and revenue of $3.15 billion-$3.41 billion.Earlier this month, Starbucks applied a realignment of its organization structure, with the retail businesses split into Americas, China, and Asia Pacific, and EMA forecast 2012 margin in Asia region around 30%.The company also announced plans to bring wine, beer and premium food offerings to a handful of locations in Atlanta and Southern California by the end of this year. The Labor Department is reporting a gain of 21,000 in weekly jobless claims last week, to a seasonally adjusted 377,000, while economists had expected claims to rise to 370,000. Icahn Picks Up 14% Stake in CVR Energy
Activist investor Carl Icahn and his fund picked up a 14 and a halfpercent stake in CVR Energy (CVI.N), saying the shares wereundervalued. Now CVR is an independent petroleum refiner and andmarketer of transportation fuels.Experts say Icahn will most likely remain passive in CVR. The stock istrading extremely cheap, at around $24 now, and 2 and a half timesEBITDA. And Icahn acquired the entire position in December of 2011,when the stock was even cheaper. He acquired common stock for $19 pershare, at the highest, and options, topping off at $23.13.
